Why can most religions use some form of prayer beads, but not the ones known as Protestants?

Protestants have used beads in the past. Read "Ten for sorrow, Five for Joy" by a Methodist. I don't have the author's name with me now. By definition, Protestants protest against something, usually a Catholic thing, like beads.
